Buenos Aires - Former Argentine President Raul Alfonsin is dead, according to his doctor, he died on Tuesday evening at the age of 82 from cancer. Alfonsin was from 1983 to 1989 head of state and is a symbol of peaceful transition from military dictatorship (1976 to 1983) to democracy, as it were perhaps the first case against leading members of the military junta of serious human rights violations.
After the defeat in the 1982 war over the Falkland Islands with Great Britain Alfonsin was elected by the Liberal Radical Civic Union (UCR) in October 1983 as Head of State. The government set up under its National Commission the disappearance of persons (CONADEP) presented a sensational report entitled "Nunca más" (Never again), which documented nearly 9,000 cases. 1985 General Jorge Videla and Emilio Massera, former Admiral of murder and torture were sentenced to life imprisonment, other junta leaders were given multi-year prison terms.
But in the next two years adopted Alfonsin, under pressure of the army, the final stroke and the Law on the necessity to obey orders - popularly known as amnesty laws. Alfonsín rechtsperonistischer successor Carlos Menem pardoned the military finally convicted 1989/90. Only in 2005, under the President Perón Néstor Kirchner (2003 to 2007), made a ruling of the Supreme Court, according to final point and command obedience to the law are unconstitutional, clearing the way for further criminal proceedings.

The hyper inflation in a country that was heading for insolvency, was not the President, Mr. Faced with a series of general strikes Alfonsin gave his elected successor Menem took office in July 1989, six months earlier than planned.
Alfonsin was on 12 March 1927 at the small town in the province of Buenos Aires Chascomús the son of a merchant born. He studied Law and in 1963 was first elected to parliament. Until 1993, UCR-Chairman, he was elected in 2001 as a Senator for Buenos Aires, came because of health problems, but returned a year later. An influential figure in Argentine politics, he remained until his death. President Cristina Kirchner issued in his honor three days of national mourning.
